Upsets and tight battles marked the second day of main draw play in Austin, with four seeds falling as the tournament pushed into round two.
Paula Badosa battled through a three-set thriller against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, coming back from 3–5 down in the deciding set. Badosa held serve and rattled off the final four games to secure her spot in the next round. After the match, Badosa spoke about the energy from the crowd and how their support helped push her through the closing stages of the match. She will next face Lulu Sun next today/tomorrow not before 5pm on Center Court.
Lulu Sun upset top seed Emma Navarro in windy and tricky conditions, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory. After the match, Sun told the crowd she was happy to get a win in Austin, a place filled with good memories. A former University of Texas Longhorn, she helped clinch the team’s national title in 2021.
There was also an all-Croatian clash between Donna Vekić and Petra Marčinko, with Vekić powering through for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over her countrywoman. In another nationality matchup, qualifier Emerson Jones defeated fellow Australian Maddison Inglis 6-4, 6-1.
Bianca Andreescu knocked out third seed Solana Sierra of Argentina in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. After the match, Andreescu said she was excited to be back in Austin competing on the WTA stage. She was pleased with her serving and returning and noted that she feels her level improving with each match.
Doubles play gets underway tomorrow, with Shuko Aoyama and Ulrikke Eikeri facing Petra Marčinko and Aldila Sutjiadi. The match is scheduled third on Court 1.
